Mobile phones have evolved greatly from the infamous Zac Morris phone made popular on the television show Saved by the Bell in the early 90s. Then, making calls was the most important thing a mobile phone needed to do. Not so much now. The age of the smartphone and the mobile applications or apps that come with it are here to stay.

Schriever has jumped in the app market and now offers a free Schriever-specific app for Android and soon the Apple operating systems which give Schrieverites a more convenient way to get information.

"We actually got this idea from the U.S. Air Force Academy up the road," said Col. Jonathan Webb, 50th Mission Support Group commander. "They have a lot of apps up there that not only cater to the base population but specifically to cadets. We are trying to reach the same young Airmen demographic with our information and this is just one more avenue to do that."

According to a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center, 83 percent of U.S. adults have a cell phone and 42 percent of those people have smartphones. Pew found one of the highest demographics adopting smartphones vice conventional cell phones were people under the age of 45.

Most military members on their second and third enlistment have an idea where to go for information concerning the base, explained Webb.
