Schriever kicks off CFC Published Oct. 6, 2011 By Denise Covington-Curtis 50th Space Wing Public Affairs SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Every year, federal employees get the chance to give back through the Combined Federal Campaign. For Schriever and the 310th Space Wing, the campaign kicks off Oct. 6, with a variety of events at the fitness center. The first event will be a 5 K run starting at 8:30 a.m. at the fitness center followed by the CFC charity fair at 10:30 a.m. A BBQ judging contest at noon will bridge the gap until the introduction of the greased pig catching/pig kissing event at 2 p.m. "This year we will have a new element to get our Schriever CFC started," said Tech. Sgt. Anastasia Moreno, one of the three installation project officers for CFC. "We will have a pig event. We wanted something different for Schriever personnel to look forward to for CFC. So we think this will be a really big fun event to enjoy, participate in and get people out to learn more about CFC." Local rancher, Terrance Kitchens, has offered up his pigs for the events. Campaign officers are hoping people will be excited to see what's happening and come out and participate in the events to learn more about CFC and how they can make a difference through the campaign. CFC's mission is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all, according to the organization's website. The planned CFC events are open to all Schriever personnel, including family members. So whoever wants to take part can and those who just want to watch can come out and cheer on their teams. For those who have not heard of the greased pig catching event, greased pigs greased prior to the event will be in a corral area to be chased. A two person team will enter the corral area and chase a pig; once they catch the greased pig, they must put the pig in a potato sack by sliding the pig into the sack and then drag the sack, with the pig inside, across the line. This is no easy task. The pig will be slippery and definitely not want to be caught. Most importantly, both team members must cross the line before their time is tallied. The maximum time allowed for each team is 3 minutes. The team with the quickest time wins; prizes will be awarded to the fastest three teams. Those interested in competing in this competition still have to time to sign up with their unit CFC representative. "All proceeds from these events will go toward CFC as an 'undesignated contribution," said Sergeant Moreno. Another popular event planned for the day is the 'kiss a pig' contest. "The base's 'kiss a pig' event is similar to a pie in the face contest," Sergeant Moreno said. "The rules are the same. Everyone will vote by donating a quarter per vote to the person they want to kiss the pig. The top three people with the most votes will have the opportunity to kiss the pig. Now, they do have an opportunity to buy their way out. This will put number four or five eligible to kiss the pig." The base goal this year is 40 percent participation rate and $248,000.
