The 310th Space Wing has adopted Remington Park for the duration of 2010 to provide support to the community and local government.

Colorado Springs recently announced a general fund budget reduction that would severely limit the services the city can provide to its parks department, creating the need for greater community involvement in maintaining neighborhood parks, trails and green spaces.

"As much as this park gets used, it need to be taken care of," said Chuck Gordon, who lives near Remington Park and walks his dog there daily. "It is not as well kept as it used to be. When the trash cans disappeared, some people just quit."

Gordon added that he was surprised to see the trash can return and the park being cared for again.

The 310th Space Wing, the Air Force Reserve's only space wing, will team up with the Colorado Springs Park, Recreation and Cultural Services Office's Adopt-A-Park program to care for Remington Park. The parks department will re-install the park's trash can and the local squadrons of the 310th Space Wing will be responsible for collecting and removing trash throughout the park area weekly, as well as, weeding, raking and resetting wood chips, looking for graffiti, picking up debris and pet waste, and clearing sidewalks and playing surfaces.

According to 310th Space Wing commander Col. Karen A. Rizzuti, lending a hand and building strong relationships with the community has always been a part of the 310th Space Wing's rich history.

"The 310th Space Wing has always been committed to being a good neighbor in Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas," said Colonel Rizzuti. "Our Reservists and their families live and work in this community and are instrumental in keeping it strong and healthy."

Kurt Schroeder, the Parks, Trails, and Open Space Manager for Colorado Springs, said the 310th Space Wings adoption of Remington Park is park of a gReater response in the community.

"We've got a tremendous response from the community," said Mr. Schroeder. "It's them being involved, staying involved and keep up with it and primarily a matter of them donating their time."

The 310th Space Wing headquarters personnel met at the park on April 16 for the first of many cleanups in 2010. After April, the other squadrons of the Reserve space wing will take turns with cleanup duties.
