Society opens door to military widows The Society of Military Widows is open to widows of any branch of military service, regardless of the spouse's rank. The Pikes Peak Chapter 15 of the Society of Military Widows meets at 10:30 a.m. the last Wednesday of the month at the Peterson Air Force Base Club. Schriever AFB SIPRNet File Share Migration As part of the SIPR file share server migration, the 50th Space Communications Squadron will decommission Schriever AFB's old SIPR file share server (FS01) by close of business. 50 SCS strongly encourages all SIPR users verify all pertinent data has been moved. Effective Wednesday, the old file share will no longer be available for use. If you have any questions, please contact the Communication Focal Point at 567-2666 option two. Schriever hosts September nutrition class Healthy food and nutritional initiatives have come to Schriever for the month of September. On Sept. 24, learn healthy tips for the cold and flu season. AFOSI Islamic state threat briefing The briefing will provide information on the Islamic State Organization as well as to provide the base populous with information on local threat issues. Dates: Sept. 24 at 2 p.m., Oct. 9 at 10:30 a.m. and Oct. 21 at 9:30 a.m. All briefings will be given inside Building 300 Auditorium. 2nd Annual Schriever Week Celebration, Sept. 21-25 - volunteers needed Col. Burt invites all Schriever AFB units and personnel to take part in the 2nd Annual Schriever Week celebration and the final related events taking place Sept. 23-25. This year's Schriever Week is aimed at honoring Falcon Air Force Station/Schriever AFB's 30-year history. Hosted events during the week will include a 5/6 Council/SARC Aloha to Summer Mud Run, and will culminate with the Chief's barbecue, Chiefs vs. Eagles Volleyball game and top performer awards presentations on Friday. New rules for filling prescriptions Starting Oct. 1, all non-active duty TRICARE beneficiaries must fill select brand name maintenance medications through either TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery or a military pharmacy. Affected beneficiaries should receive a letter from Express Scripts this month notifying them of the need to switch the way they receive their prescriptions. After Oct. 1, beneficiaries still filling an affected medication at a retail pharmacy will receive another letter informing them of the change to the benefit. After that, beneficiaries will have one final "courtesy" fill at a retail pharmacy. If they fill at a retail pharmacy again, they will have to pay 100 percent of the cost of their medication. The law does not apply to medications people take for a short time, such as antibiotics. Beneficiaries can contact Express Scripts at 877-363-1303 to see if they are affected. For more information, visit http://www.tricare.mil/RxNewRules. Schriever Kids Helping Kids Food Drive The third annual "Kids Helping Kids" Schriever Air Force Base Teens Food Drive is underway. Last year we collected over 1,471 lbs. of food and donated over $300 to the Care and Share Food Bank of Colorado! There are three different ways to donate non-perishable food items: there is a collection box at the Tierra Vista Community Center available until October 3rd; we will be in front of the Peterson AFB commissary from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Sept. 26 - 27; or we will collect donations in the Schriever AFB housing community on Saturday October 3rd by 9 a.m. - just leave a bag with non-perishable food items labeled "Kids Helping Kids" on your front porch and we will deliver it to the Care and Share Food Bank for you. Install Smoke Alarms on each level of your home, outside each sleeping area and inside each bedroom. 2. Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms on each level of your home and outside sleeping areas (within 15 ft.). 3. Post Emergency Numbers (Fire/Police; Poison Control; Utilities: Water/Gas/Electric). 4. Know where your emergency shut-offs are (Gas/Water/Electric). 5. Have a multipurpose fire extinguisher inside your home; keep a safe distance from your stove for access. 6. Have an escape plan: two ways out/meeting point. HAWC hosts Women Living Well event The Health and Wellness Center will host a Women Living Well event Oct. 6. Get your squadron teams of four together in order to test your physical resilience, knowledge of world religion and other random trivia on a scavenger hunt toward the finish line! Protect Your Family from Carbon Monoxide Safe use and proper installation of household appliances that burn fossil fuels, i.e. fuel fired furnaces, gas water heaters, gas stoves and fireplaces is the best protection against carbon monoxide you can provide your family. CO detectors can increase protection, but are not a substitute for safe use of equipment. Have all heating equipment inspected and serviced yearly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation of CO detectors; install at least one detector near sleeping areas and one on every level of your home. Buy a smoke alarm at any hardware or discount store. It's inexpensive protection for you and your family. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Working smoke alarms can cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Test it monthly, keep it free of dust and replace the battery at least once a year. Smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years of service or as recommended by the manufacturer. Complete your MiCare-RelayHealth Registration The Schriever Clinic sent email invitations to all personnel's "af.mil" accounts who are enrolled at the clinic. Please respond to this invitation. Registration takes less than a minute. MiCare-RelayHealth is a Department of Defense secure messaging system. Connect with your provider so you can stay informed of your health and wellness. Did you know this is open to dependents? Children under 18 may be enrolled under a parent. Those 18 and older may request an individual account. For more information, please contact Maj. Schriever facilities undergo winterization The following facilities have no water as part of the Utilities shop winterization for this upcoming cold weather season: softball field restrooms, outdoor running track restrooms, Child Development Center playground, wash rack and indoor running track. These facilities are winterized now and will not return to service until Spring 2016. If there are any questions, contact Civil Engineering customer service at 719-567-2300. Dry Cleaning Express service available The dry cleaning drop box at the Schriever Shoppette is available. Drop off for Mondays are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and pick up is Thursday any time after 3 p.m. Drop off for Thursdays are 6 a.m. to 2.p.m. and pick up is Monday any time after 3 p.m. The concessionaire will pick up and drop off between 2 to 2:30 p.m. both days. Save Gas Money - ride a Vanpool-Falcon Did you know the government provides $130 per ride, per month to pay for commuter vans? Department of Defense civilians and uniformed military personnel are eligible. Transportation originates from the Falcon Wal-Mart located on Woodmen and Meridian Market View Road. The van departs weekdays at 6:25 a.m. and arrives at Schriever Air Force Base at 6:55 a.m. At the end of the duty day, the van departs from Schriever Air Force Base at 4:10 p.m. and arrives at Falcon Wal-Mart at 4:40 p.m. Drop off and pick up points on Schriever Air Force Base may vary. "I am SCHRIEVER" to highlight military children Does your son or daughter have an amazing talent, skill or hobby? Are they an excellent example of resilience? Maybe they've moved multiple times, as many military children do? Public Affairs is looking for children of personnel assigned to Schriever to highlight for our "I am SCHRIEVER" campaign. Questions or concerns may be directed to Public Affairs at 719-567-5040. Subway Food Truck comes to Schriever A Subway mobile food vender will be on Schriever every Wednesday. Army-Air Force Exchange Service has arranged the truck to be on base from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will leave sooner if they run out of product. The vendor will set up on the north side of the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Building 101. They will feature a limited Subway menu for purchase. Subway is also taking pre-orders for Wednesday Delivery. Call in your sandwich order, (any sandwich, any way you want it) before Tuesday of any week and they will deliver it in their truck to you on Wednesdays. Crime Prevention Tip When observing an aggressive driver who is putting other motorists at risk, pull over to the side of the road to utilize your cellular device or hands free device and contact local Security Forces, Colorado Highway Patrol or El Paso County as soon as possible and be prepared to provide the following information: vehicle description, license plate number, location and direction of travel, driver description and the aggressive driving behavior being demonstrated.
